SNOW Contemporary is pleased to announce Korehiko Hino solo exhibition “Statue” from Thursday, November 10th through Saturday December 10th.

Born in Wajima, Ishikawa in 1976, Hino completed the Master Course in Painting at University of Tsukuba in 2001, and was awarded the VOCA Price at "VOCA 2005 The Vision of Contemporary Art" in 2005, which drew him into the limelight with his representative almost frantic portraits. Recent activities include solo exhibitions such as “Wandering and Questioning” (Shanghai Art Museum) in 2010, "Korehiko Hino - What Lies Beneath" at The Ueno Royal Museum Gallery in 2011, and group exhibitions including “Currents Japanese Contemporary Art” (THE JAMES CHRISTIE ROOM, Hong Kong) and “Storytellers” at SNOW Contemporary in 2014, and continues expanding expressions of the two dimensional utilizing mediums such as oil paintings, drawings, water colors and many others.

On this occasion, he exhibits approximately five new statue works created through 2015 and 2016.
The features found in Hino’s portraits, for example vacantly wide-open eyes, half open mouths, and immaturely naked bodies, are drawn by eliminating the physical and social characteristics in the poses and expressions of people in his works. However, as long as the work is in a two dimensional form, it is inevitable not to draw factors besides the figures such as light, shadow and backgrounds. Statues, on the other hand, are a medium that could focus all elements consisting the human body, allowing him to purify his expressions as portraiture. Hino challenges here to cultivate the horizon of new expressions that he could not attain within two-dimensional works.
We highly look forward to sharing with you such new challenges by the artist at our gallery.
